How we compared these ChatGPT alternatives
We looked at what you get without paying, the price of the first paid tier and of the power tiers, the current flagship model, and one or two things each assistant does better than ChatGPT. Prices are US list prices before tax from each company’s official pricing page; prices in other countries and in mobile app stores can differ. Where a company does not publish a number, we say so instead of guessing.
The 8 best ChatGPT alternatives in 2026
1. Claude: best for writing, long documents and coding
Anthropic’s Claude is the closest all-round rival to ChatGPT and the one many writers and developers prefer. The free plan runs Claude Sonnet and Haiku with web search, file creation, code execution, memory and Artifacts, within limits that reset every five hours and every week. Paid plans unlock Opus 5.5 and Claude Code:
- Pro: $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly.
- Max: $100 a month for 5x the Pro usage. Ultra: $200 a month for 10x Pro weekly usage.
Where it beats ChatGPT: every current Claude model has a context window of up to 1 million tokens, against 54K (or 256K when reasoning) on ChatGPT Plus, so whole books, contracts and codebases fit in one chat. Anthropic has also committed to keeping Claude free of ads. Where it falls short: Claude does not generate photos or illustrations, only diagrams and charts, and the free plan has no Opus. 2. Google Gemini: best value and best for Google users
Gemini has the most generous free plan of the big three: image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live voice, Canvas, Gems and 15 GB of storage, running on the Flash-Lite model. Paid plans add storage and Google’s flagship model:
- Google AI Plus: $4.99 a month for the Flash model, twice the free usage and 400 GB of storage.
- Google AI Pro: $19.99 a month for Gemini 4 Argon, 4x the usage, 5 TB of storage, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and YouTube Premium Lite.
- Google AI Ultra: $99.99 or $199.99 a month for 5x or 20x the Pro usage.
Where it beats ChatGPT: the cheapest paid upgrade on this list, a 1 million token context on AI Pro, and storage plus Gmail, Docs and Drive integration in the same bill. Where it falls short: the free plan only gets the lightweight Flash-Lite model. Source: gemini.google.
3. Perplexity: best for research with sources
Perplexity works like a search engine that answers in full sentences and cites its sources inline, which makes it easy to check facts. The free plan covers search with basic models. Pro costs $17 a month billed yearly and lets you choose between models from several companies, including GPT-6.1 Sol, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Gemini 3.8 Flash and Grok 4.7, plus Perplexity Computer for multi-step tasks. Max costs $200 a month or $2,000 a year, and students can get Education Pro for $10 a month.
Where it beats ChatGPT: citations on every answer and several companies’ models in one subscription. Where it falls short: it is built for questions and research, so long creative writing and open-ended chat feel less natural. Source: perplexity.ai.
4. Microsoft Copilot: best for Word, Excel and Outlook
Copilot is free to use in its own app, and Microsoft now sells its paid AI as part of Microsoft 365 rather than as a separate plan:
- Microsoft 365 Personal: $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year.
- Microsoft 365 Family: $12.99 a month or $129.99 a year (AI features for the subscription owner).
- Microsoft 365 Premium: $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year, with the highest Copilot usage and agentic research.
Where it beats ChatGPT: for the price of ChatGPT Plus, Premium also gives you the Office apps and cloud storage, with Copilot built into Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Where it falls short: Microsoft describes usage only as “higher than free” or “extensive”, without published limits. Source: microsoft.com.
5. Grok: best for live news and X
xAI’s Grok runs on Grok 4.7 and searches the web and X in real time, which makes it good at fast-moving news. Its plans now span a wide range: a limited free tier, Plus at $8 a month (which includes X Premium), Premium at $30 for 4x the Plus usage, Super at $100 for 15x and Ultra at $200 for 50x, with usage refreshed weekly.
Where it beats ChatGPT: live X search, and text-to-video clips of up to 15 seconds in the app, now that OpenAI has shut down Sora. Where it falls short: it has drawn more controversy than any other assistant here, which some companies weigh before allowing it at work. Many sites still quote the old SuperGrok prices; the figures above are from x.ai/pricing.
6. DeepSeek: best free chat and cheapest API
DeepSeek’s web chat and mobile apps are free, with no paid consumer plan. Its current models, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and V4 Pro, handle up to 1 million tokens of context, and the API is one of the cheapest available: V4.1 Flash costs $0.15 to $0.30 per million input tokens.
Where it beats ChatGPT: strong reasoning at no cost, and very low API prices for developers. Where it falls short: DeepSeek’s privacy policy says it stores data in the People’s Republic of China, so keep personal and company data out of it. Source: DeepSeek API docs.
7. Meta AI: best for quick help inside the apps you already use
Meta AI is free for everyday use and built into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, so there is nothing to install. In September 2026 Meta launched Meta One subscriptions, Core at $7.99 and Premium at $19.99 a month, which mainly add more image and video generation.
Where it beats ChatGPT: it is already in your chats and free. Where it falls short: the paid tiers are about media, not a stronger assistant, and it is less suited to long documents or code. Source: Meta.
8. Mistral Vibe: best European option and student price
Mistral’s assistant, called Le Chat until it was renamed Vibe in August 2026, comes from a French company. The free plan has a limited number of messages. Pro costs $14.99 a month and includes $15 of API credits, students pay $5.99, and Team costs $24.99 per user.
Where it beats ChatGPT: a lower price than Plus and a European provider. Where it falls short: the free plan runs out quickly. Source: mistral.ai/pricing.
Best free ChatGPT alternatives
If you do not want to pay at all, these give the most for free:
- Google Gemini: images, Deep Research and voice on the free plan.
- Claude: Sonnet for writing and analysis, no ads.
- Perplexity: answers with sources for research and homework.
- DeepSeek: free reasoning, with the privacy caveat above.
- Microsoft Copilot and Meta AI: free and already inside apps you use.

Which ChatGPT alternative should you pick?
- Writing, editing and long PDFs: Claude, thanks to its 1M token context.
- Coding: Claude, with Claude Code included in every paid plan.
- Research and fact-checking: Perplexity, because every answer shows its sources.
- Images and a tight budget: Gemini, free or $4.99 for AI Plus.
- Office work: Copilot with Microsoft 365.
- Breaking news and social trends: Grok.
- No ads: Claude, or Mistral Vibe if you prefer a European provider.
Many people end up with two tools: one main assistant and Perplexity or Gemini for quick searches.
Ads and privacy: what to check before you switch
Ads are now part of the comparison. OpenAI started showing ads to ChatGPT Free and Go users in the US in February 2026 and later in Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand, while Plus and higher plans stay ad-free. Anthropic has publicly committed to no ads in Claude.
Data location matters too. DeepSeek stores data in China. For any assistant, check its settings for whether your chats are used to train models, and keep passwords, client data and private code out of shared or free accounts.
