Claude vs ChatGPT: Which One Is Worth Paying For?
Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus both cost $20 a month. Claude wins on writing, long documents and coding; ChatGPT wins on images, voice and all-round features. Here is the full comparison for 2026.
Key takeaways
- Both cost $20 a month for the main paid plan, but Claude Pro drops to $17 a month on yearly billing, which ChatGPT Plus does not offer.
- Pick Claude for writing, long documents and coding: its paid plans read up to 1M tokens at once, against 256K on ChatGPT Plus.
- Pick ChatGPT for image generation, voice and an all-in-one toolkit. ChatGPT shows ads only on Free and Go; Claude has pledged to stay ad-free.
Claude vs ChatGPT is the comparison most people make before paying for an AI assistant, and the answer changed in 2026. OpenAI moved ChatGPT to GPT-6, added ads to its free tiers and launched ChatGPT Work. Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5, renamed its top plan to Ultra and merged its Cowork agent into chat. This guide compares the two on price, model quality, writing, coding, images, research and privacy, using the companies’ own pricing and help pages and independent leaderboards, all checked on 4 November 2026.

Price: what each plan costs
At the entry level the two are priced the same: ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro both cost $20 a month. The differences are around the edges. Claude Pro can be paid yearly for $200 ($17 a month), while OpenAI lists Plus as monthly only. ChatGPT has a cheaper $8 Go plan with GPT-6 Luna and ads, which Claude has no equivalent for. At the top, ChatGPT Pro comes in $100, $200 and $500 sizes, against Claude Max at $100 and Ultra at $200.

Which is smarter? Benchmarks and leaderboards
Both companies publish benchmark tables, and each tends to pick the tests it wins. Anthropic’s Opus 5.5 announcement puts it ahead of GPT-6 Astra on Terminal-Bench 4.0 (66.4% vs 57.9%) and Humanity’s Last Exam with tools (67.7% vs 57.2%), and behind on Terminal-Bench-Science (58.7% vs 64.6%). OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra announcement shows Astra ahead of Claude Fable 5.1 on GPQA Diamond (96.0% vs 93.7%) and FrontierMath Tier 4 (97.6% vs 87.8%).
Independent rankings lean towards Claude at the top end. On the Arena text leaderboard updated on 27 October 2026, Claude Opus 5.5 ranks 3rd, while GPT-6.1 Sol is 27th and GPT-6 Sol, the model ChatGPT uses by default, is 64th. On the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, Opus 5.5 scores 59, GPT-6 Astra 57 and GPT-6.1 Sol 55.
Two caveats. On ChatGPT Plus, GPT-6 Astra is only available in limited amounts inside Work and Codex, so the everyday chat model is GPT-6 Sol. And Anthropic itself calls benchmark margins a less reliable guide than real use, so treat these numbers as a tiebreaker, not a verdict.
Writing and long documents
This is Claude’s clearest advantage. On paid plans, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5 and Fable 5.1 accept up to 1 million tokens in a chat, enough for several books or a large contract bundle. ChatGPT Plus gives 54K tokens for quick answers and 256K when reasoning; Pro raises that to 128K and 400K.
- Claude takes files up to 500 MB, 20 files per chat, and PDFs up to 1,000 pages, reading charts and images in the first 100 pages.
- ChatGPT takes documents up to 512 MB or 2M tokens per file, with up to 80 uploads every three hours on paid plans (three a day on Free).
Reviewers and users in the top search results agree on the pattern: Claude for long-form writing, editing and analysis, ChatGPT for short, quick answers and search-style questions.
Coding: Claude Code vs Codex
Both $20 plans include a coding agent. Claude Pro includes Claude Code, which runs in the terminal and in VS Code, Cursor and JetBrains, and shares its allowance with chat. ChatGPT Plus includes Codex, available as a desktop app, a command-line tool and in the cloud, with a separate allowance from chat. Claude Opus 5.5 leads GPT-6 Astra on Anthropic’s coding benchmarks, and several of the top-ranking reviews recommend Claude for developers. Heavy users of either will want a higher plan or an API key.
Images, voice and everyday features
- Images: ChatGPT generates and edits images, in limited amounts on Free and fully from Go upwards, with ChatGPT Images 2.5 since September 2026. Claude does not generate photos or illustrations; it builds charts, diagrams, slides and interactive visuals instead.
- Voice: ChatGPT Plus includes three hours of voice per 24 hours with GPT-Live-1.1. Claude has voice mode on every plan without published hour limits.
- Memory and projects: both have memory and projects on all plans. Claude stores memories as editable topics; ChatGPT can also draw on past chats, files and connected apps.
- Connectors: both connect to Gmail, Google Drive, Slack and custom MCP servers.
- Apps: both have web, iOS, Android, Mac and Windows apps. ChatGPT has a browser extension for Chrome, Edge and others after retiring its Atlas browser in August 2026; Claude in Chrome is for paid plans.
Research, web search and agents
Both search the web on every plan. ChatGPT’s deep research is limited on Free and Go and included on Plus. Claude’s Research needs Pro or higher, always runs on Opus 5.5 and can pull from your connected Gmail, Calendar and Docs.
For agents that work on tasks for you, ChatGPT launched ChatGPT Work in July 2026 on desktop, web and mobile for paid plans. Claude merged its Cowork agent into normal chat from September and offers computer use in beta on the desktop app for Pro, Max and Ultra. Both are evolving quickly; neither is a reason on its own to pick one over the other yet.
Privacy, ads and training
- Ads: ChatGPT shows ads on Free and Go in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Plus and higher are ad-free. Anthropic has pledged that Claude will remain ad-free.
- Training: on both, consumer chats can be used to train models by default and you can opt out in settings. ChatGPT’s temporary chats and Claude’s incognito chats are never used. If you leave training on in Claude, Anthropic keeps that data for up to five years.
- Business plans: ChatGPT Business does not use workspace data to train models.
Perplexity vs ChatGPT: the third option
If your main use is looking things up, Perplexity is worth comparing too. Every answer comes with numbered sources, and Perplexity Pro ($17 a month billed yearly) lets you switch between models from several companies, including GPT-6.1 Sol, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Gemini 3.8 Flash and Grok 4.7. It also has its own Comet browser. ChatGPT is broader, with images, voice, Codex and Work, while Perplexity is better at research you need to check. Our list of ChatGPT alternatives compares it with five more assistants.
Claude or ChatGPT: which one is worth paying for?
- Writers, students with long readings, analysts and lawyers: Claude Pro, for the 1M context and the writing quality.
- Developers: Claude Pro for Claude Code, or both if you want Codex as a second opinion.
- Creators who need images and voice: ChatGPT Plus.
- A tight budget: ChatGPT Go at $8 if ads do not bother you, or Claude Pro on yearly billing at $17.
- Heavy daily users: many pay for both, using one for writing and code and the other for images, voice and quick questions.
Paying for ChatGPT or Claude with crypto
OpenAI and Anthropic only take cards and a few local wallets. AITopUp sells ChatGPT Plus paid in USDT or other crypto, from $5.99 a month for a shared account or $17.99 for a private seat, with a 30-day warranty. For Claude, developers can use a Claude API key: a prepaid token pack served through a third-party gateway (not issued by Anthropic) that works with Claude Code, Cursor and Cline.
